Born on January 7, 1968, into the distinguished family of Alhaji and Alhaja A.G.T. Idowu of blessed memory, in the serene Ikemo Compound of Oju-Olojo Quarters, Ojo, Rasulu’s journey is deeply rooted in commitment to uplifting the lives of his fellow citizens. And with a remarkable ability to inspire change and a passion for enhancing the socio-economic landscape, he has become a transformative figure whose impact visibly felt in the council.
Engraved in the annals of his life is a strong educational foundation that began at St. Michael School, Ojo, where he imbibed the virtues of discipline and diligence during his formative years. He furthered his academic pursuits at the prestigious Awori College, Ojo. He proceeded to the Lagos State University Ojo, where he earned a Bachelor’s Degree in Sociology, and later pursued a Master’s in Public Administration (MPA) from the same institution. This robust educational background equipped him with the analytical skills and leadership qualities essential for effective governance.
Alhaji Idowu’s illustrious career as a public servant is defined by remarkable resilience. He embarked on his journey in the Lagos State Local Government Service, initially starting as a Clerical Officer and steadily ascending the ranks to the Administrative Cadre. His remarkable trajectory through nearly three decades of dedicated service saw him occupy numerous sensitive managerial and administrative positions that allowed him to amass a wealth of experience and insight into the intricacies of public administration. After 28 years of meritorious service, he voluntarily exited from the local government service, leaving behind a legacy of excellence and commitment to public welfare. In the 2017 Local Government Elections, Alhaji Rasulu Idowu contested for the position of Executive Chairman of Ojo Local Government and won by a landslide margin. With a wealth of robust ideas, he raised the bar of governance and positioned Ojo Local Government as “The Most Caring Local Government” in Lagos State. Under his leadership, communities in the council witnessed transformative changes occasioned by reconstruction of roads, rehabilitation of schools and the provision of educational materials, such as bags, sandals and uniforms for students.
One of his most commendable initiatives has been the remarkable turnaround of the Primary Health Care sector, where he ensured the availability of essential medical equipment and medications, alongside periodic health care outreach programmes that reached all five political wards. His commitment to community welfare brought about an environment of peace and tranquillity, as he launched extensive economic empowerment programmes for women, youths and vulnerable populations. These initiatives provided financial assistance ranging from N25,000 to N100,000 that created pathways for entrepreneurship and financial independence.
Engr. Idowu’s transformative initiatives did not stop at economic empowerment. He also undertook the construction and rehabilitation of drainage systems, provision of boreholes in various localities and the supply of speed boats for students and teachers in the riverine areas of the local government area. His generosity extended to the provision of over 15 power transformers (500KVA) to enhance electricity supply, food and cash gifts for the elderly, widows and vulnerable individuals, as well as routine medical checkups for residents. He also ensured financial assistance for students in tertiary institutions, regular bursary awards and the distribution of palliative packages to cushion the impact of the country’s economic realities. Recognising the significance of education and health, he has continuously advocated programmes that uplift communities.
In a testament to his unparalleled leadership, Alhaji Rasulu Idowu re-contested for the position of Executive Chairman of Ojo Local Government on July 24, 2021, during the Lagos State Local Government Elections and emerged victorious once again. His second term has been defined by an extraordinary transformation in infrastructure, with major road networks and public facilities being upgraded and expanded. The enhancement of accessibility and connectivity for all residents has been a hallmark of his administration, as he remains unwaveringly committed to modernising key infrastructure for sustained development.
Under his watch, every major street in both upland and riverine areas now boasts of solar street lighting that ensures community enjoys improved security and illumination. Furthermore, the local council now proudly boasts of an interactive electricity supply system, incorporating solar power, generator backup and government power supply, a testament to his innovative approach to energy sustainability.
Alhaji Idowu has championed numerous programmes aimed boost entrepreneurship, job creation and sustainable economic growth. Through targeted initiatives, he has empowered over 2,000 local businesses with amounts ranging from N20,000 to N100,000, facilitating skill development and encouraging investment. A distinguished fellow of the Institute of Public Administration of Nigeria (IPAN), Alhaji Rasulu Idowu has garnered numerous accolades for his outstanding contributions to society. These include the Award of Recognition and Outstanding Performance from the State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB), the Award of Excellence as an Icon of Societal Development by the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS), and the Award of Best Performing Local Government Chairman in Nigeria by Rootatch Magazine in 2018.
